MSG Quake 3 Mapping Competition #3

Post by cityy »

For the third time, MaverickServers is hosting a Quake 3 mapping competition. Mappers from the community are encouraged to participate; veteran mappers and those looking to get into mapping are welcome to join in on the fun. Prizes will be awarded to the best maps.

The contest will start in late May or early June and run for roughly 10 weeks. Judging will occur for 1 week after. Registration deadline is 3 weeks after the start date (roughly around June 21st). More information will be posted here and on the main competition forums as it becomes available.

AMD, ATI, Sapphire, Autodesk, Planetside Software, and Crucial were the last competition sponsors and provided some really great incentives.

PRIZES AND SPONSORS:
-Massacre Servers donated $100; please see payment notes at the bottom
-Lunar Module donated 3 one year web and email hosting packages; please see hosting notes at the bottom
-CG Textures donated a one year 100MB membership package
-Luxology donated a copy of Modo 501 modeling and rendering sotfware.
-Ready Up Radio donated $50; please see payment notes at the bottom
-Sapphire donated one SAPPHIRE HD 6870 FleX graphics card with Eyefinity
-Wacom donated one Intuos4 Medium pen tablet
-Kot-in-Action have donated 10 copies of their latest game release, Steel Storm: Burning Retribution available on Steam

RULES:

-The map should be able to hold at least 8 players suitable for 4v4 TDM/CTF or 8 players FFA or be a 1v1 map (although 1v1/tournament maps will be held to the same quality levels as more complex TDM/CTF maps)
-Doesn't necessarily have to support a specific gametype or mod, but you are welcome to specify one
-Map must be previously unreleased or a new design. Please no map remakes or edits.
-Map must contain sponsor images. Gotta show some thanks, right?
-Full rule listing at the main competition website

JUDGING:

-Will be done by a panel of experienced players and mappers who are familiar with that map's chosen audience (ie: a CPM map is judged by CPM players, a CTF map is judged by CTF players, etc)
-Scored primarily on gameplay/design and also on overall looks, creativity, and layout
-Judges: TBA

NOTES:
- The winner(s) receiving money as a prize are required to have a Paypal.com account.
- Hosting prize notes: The winner(s) receiving web and email hosting prizes will receive 1 year of web hosting with 100MB of storage and 1 database, 1 mailbox with 100MB of storage, and a subdomain of lunarmodule.co.uk or domain hosting if a domain is already owned.

Note to potential competitors: the orange piglet I received from Crucial/Ballistix was more than enough compensation for the time and effort. It's so cute! :P

Leave it to id to step up and make things a little more interesting when things get down to the wire.

Nice addition.

Gee. Honestly, I didn't expect that there are mapping competitions this big for this old, dusty engine until I went back into business.
Gonna take a look at the winner map to see whether I stand any chance if I were to try my luck next time an opportunity like this arises.
