Senna

Post by Nightshade »

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1424432/ Any of you Brits seen this yet? It hasn't been released in the US, although for some reason I was able to start watching it last night... :paranoid:

I've heard great reviews and from what I've seen so far (about 30 minutes), it's excellent. Lots and lots of archival footage from the Senna family, the F1 archives, Bernie's personal stuff, interviews with the man himself, etc. It's not splashy (thank god Hollywood didn't go with their proposed version of having Antonio Banderas play Ayrton, yeesh), it's a rather intimate, slow-paced portrait of Senna's career.

I read Prost vs. Senna not too long ago and it's fascinating to see played out on film. I forgot what a maestro Senna was in the rain, I watched a bit about the '84 race in Monaco. Senna was in his 8th F1 race, driving for Toleman-Hart. The car was crap, he qualified 13th and then just started scything through the field like it was a Sunday afternoon drive through the countryside. He passed Niki Lauda like he was standing still and was closing in on Prost (who was waving his arms at the stewards to stop the race), and passed him just as Prost crossed the finish line as they waved the red flag and ended the race. Three more laps and he would have done the impossible: Passed 12 cars at Monaco and won. That simply can't be done...

I'll post a full review once I'm finished watching it, but has anyone else seen it yet?

Thanks for the reminder, I read about this a while back and meant to grab it but then it completely slipped my mind.

Yeah I have been to see it.

Brilliant bit of film which showed the real Senna; unrelenting perfectionist with balls the size of melons. Hated losing and did everything to win, but had so much compasion of others it was unreal. Humble and genuine. Lots of unseen footage. Lovely to watch, but no matter what you always have that sense forboding as you knw the final outcome.

Look out for brutal bits involving Rubens, Ratzenberger and particulary Martin Donnelly. All of those made me genuinely sad...and the crescendo is as expected; heart breaking. Beautifully made and I highly recommend it.

Instant blu-ray purchase for me...

ayrton senna was a god in the rain. I swear I think of him everytime I turn on and watch some F1. He was without a doubt my favorite racer as a kid, mostly due to Ayrton Senna's super monaco GP that I used to play as a kid :)

Hmm...you think the limited U.S. release will make it to Cincinnati? lol. Just like TT3D did.

Pretty stupid when your options are region locked discs and nothing.

oh wai piracy

I don't either, but in this case...

I will see it in the theater, and I will buy it on Bluray, assuming it's available.

NA theatrical release starts next week. Here’s the Google map showing all the theaters in NA that will be showing the film.

I may go watch it at the Sunshine Cinema in NYC the week of the August 15th :D

I hope they’ll also release it on BD; it’ll be the first BD movie I’ll purchase.

Does anyone have firsthand or other info about the whole Prost/Senna debacle surrounding the 89 championship? I was just wondering if Senna really did get screwed/Prost got favor as much as the film made it out, or if it wasn't the whole story. From the film it really sounded like he got proper fucked and Prost doesn't come off as a solid character.

I was about 3 at the time so I don't remember much about it.

I might have to get a passport to see it. Only place within 500 miles with the class to show it is Toronto.

There's one north of Indy and I'm headed there for the GP race this weekend...only 2 and 1/2 hours from where I live (i pirated it).

Still, I'm glad it's here because it means it will get a release in this region on disc, and I hear there's a non-theatre version with much more driver interviews that they cut to keep it short and flowing.

Interesting that it's being played in so few theaters, particularly since a local news channel reported on it in their "upcoming movies to see" segment. They never said you might have trouble finding it in a theater, though. :olo:
Looks like it'll be playing in my city, but I don't plan to go. I never got into F1 and hadn't even heard of Senna until I started watching Top Gear.

Still, it looks like it would be pretty interesting nonetheless... I might consider downloading it sometime in the future.

Finally went to see it at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center (not a traditional theatre) at Lincoln Center in NYC tonight:

http://www.filmlinc.com/films/on-sale/senna

http://www.filmlinc.com/about/the-elino ... ilm-center

Viewer turnout was better than I expected TBH. I’d say the room (similar to the room shown in the 3rd pic in the link above) was at around 75% capacity for the showing I went to.

The film, while not perfect IMHO, is a great documentary as so many reviews have already indicated. It’s a must-see for any Senna fan. I’d write a better review if I were not so damn tired right now…
