Rage - Uncompressed

Post by Infernis »

Do I dare post this here?
I guess so :paranoid:

Hello,

If you would also like to see an uncompressed version of Rage for the PC which would dramatically improve the texture quality, please sign this petition.

Thank you
Inf - Leaving in it's torturous wake nothing but vicious, cannabalistic, mutated, radiated and horribly disfigured hordes of satanic killers!

An umcompressed version of Rage would be around 1tb in size. Its not going to happen. Ever.

A simple two times resolution bump means 4x the file size. A 60-80 gig download is never going to happen. Ever.

The best you can hope for is that id release the source art assets and a tool that will allow you to re-compress the mega textures at your requested level. Not only will this take a LOT of time and a monster rig to do, but also a shit load of time away from things the devs should be doing, and it wont give them any money at all. Thats never going to happen.

Ever.

Pick one.

John Carmack thought it would be nifty to upload a higher resolution megatexture during his QuakeCon keynote this year. Doesn't mean it will happen, but it does mean that it's possible they might release something. It wouldn't necessarily bump up the resolution of everything, just the lower resolution stuff. But as o'dium said, source textures uncompressed is over 1TB of data.

'Uncompressed' really isn't a fair measurement. Any recent title would likely be over 100GB if the textures were all uncompressed (as in RAW, not DDS/PNG/whatever).

The character textures are fine, along with a few world details. It's mainly macro and enviromental/actor models than have the shit textures. They wouldn't all need to be replaced, they just need to be more unified in quality.

what was so shit about the story anyway? or you just bitter? i read the free comics while it was installing and it filled in a little prologue. might have helped. they just needed more. more world, more settlements more of everything really... maybe they went a bit far streamlining the experience.. i dunno

i cant help think the end got lopped off for rage 2 or future dlc. if they can get it out the door within the next few years not another 7 i think they are onto a solid new ip... apart from that i cant complain.. it must be good, im on my second play through which is rare as hell. was sad when it ended, i wanted more and really enjoyed my time in their universe...

as for better gfx, who really cares?

Oh come on o'dium, no need to have people download it. They can just release a ~120 dual-layer DVD package.

If you couldn't tell, that was sarcasm.

It's too bad that 1TB is considered too big of a download... :disgust: It's really not much. Release it to South Koreans, don't they have the fastest intardnet in the world?

Well, if 1TB was not too big to download, one would assume that hopefully standard HDD sizes would be in the 50-100TB range and thus it would not be a problem :D

But yeah... </dreamland>

Maybe in the future when we have 1-petabyte hard drives (probably not that far away tbh... maybe a decade from now?) it could happen.

we'd have the same conversation about Rage 4 and its 1 petabyte ubertexture, not to mention Scared? reminding us all how poor we are for having a standard definition holodeck

we'd be better served with more efficient programming and optimized compression

yeah, as if we ever went the extra mile without it being absolutely necessary.
