Most of the regulars still posting in the Void should read and consider this, maybe then this forum will stop being utter crap and start being interesting again, the following was posted in April 2000, take heed and bear witness to the truths that lie herein:

Flaming: Guide

Flaming.

A chased after art, practiced well by only a few, misunderstood by many and attempted by nearly everyone in their lives, at least once.

A flame war is a very bitter and cutting argument, between 2 parties (usually)
People take sides, like a good team deathmatch.

The objective of a flame war is to silence the opponent by posting something so devastatily powerful in its smackdown of the opponent, that there is no reply that the opponent can make, that wouldnt be seen as a halfbaked, tit-for-tat petty comment by anyone else reading the thread.

It rarely happens. Usually a flame war drags out to the point where one party gets bored, and leaves, or someone witha position of authority kills it...

Here are some notes anyway. References to this thread are made; I nded up having a mild (from my point of view) pop at psycho_boy. Im not advocating this as a good flame example.. I wouldnt even call it flaming; there isnt enough deep, cutting remarks and sophisticated outwitting of the opponent; I just took the piss totally, as can be seen from the writing style I adopted. Read the thread for its humour value more than anything

After the thread was closed, I was genuinely glad I wouldnt have to suffer pscho_biys childish rants again, and I thanked R Cain for it.. a thread that psycho showed up again in trying to start something again. Here is the thread in question

Notes for flaming, just incase you newbies wanna give it some:

Dont wax lyrical about how much you so won over the other guy. If the other guy is still posting, and its not inane shite, then you havent won yet.

Dont repeat yourself over and over with the same angle (even if you do use different words) like psycho_boy did.. it makes your opponent really bored and they wander off looking for somehting more interesting. At this point, dont start jumping up and down about how you won; you look like a fool and anyone who follows the thread for a few of your posts will realise it.

Dont expect your opponent to answer every single one of your points. Psycho couldnt believe I ignored his pathetic and inconsequential remark about me being a cocksucker, and made an ass of himself by dragging it up as if it were the most important thing about the thread. I ignored the remark mainly because it was childish and petty, and it had no relevance to the discussion at all

Dont be a sore loser. You may well lose at some time or another, just accept it. If your opponent makes a post, so devastatingly final in every way, and you cannot reply to it, politely quit the discussion. You may not have won the battle, but the war will fight itself. If your opponent then stages posting about how great he is because he smacked you down, rest assured that the rest of the world looks on him as a tosser and are of the opinion that you won the war.

A good winner NEVER brags about it. its a lot like quake 3 really... Dregoth does insanely well with his ping, but never shoots his mouth off about how cool he is at railing.

Dont pick up on grammar, spelling or typos. It looks real lame. The exception to this is when the other guy had a pop at you first, in which case a correction of his error (without the added "you thick twat" comment) will be more than humiliating enough, moreso of you post a link that looks up the word on dictionary.com

Dont lose sight of the fact that youre here to learn, contribute and participate. At the end of the day a flame war is totally pointless, you (I) do it because it feels good to put one over some dickhead occasionally. In RnR some people make it a way of life. These are distressed people indeed, probably with inferiority complexes. Dont become one of them.

Finally, dont be too quick to jump on something, based on a false assumption. psycho made the mistake of accusing me of deleting one of my posts, saying I regretted it and He smacked me down so well I was moved to take it down. I think about everything I post and regretted nothing; as it was R Cain, the moderator felt it shouldnt have been there so he removed it, and when asked, confirmed his actions in writing. Psycho shut up about it after that (going back to the point about good winning.. I didnt shove it down his throat and gloat over him. I doubt he noticed this)
