Congrats Quake II

Post by Eraser »

Today marks Quake II's 15th birthday!

Tim Willits shares a few facts about the game on Bethesda's Blog. I've listed all three of them here:
- Only three artists made all the 2D and 3D art for the entire game.
- One of the original suggested names for QUAKE II was WOR, but the game’s fast-paced, tactile feel felt closer to a QUAKE game than a new franchise.
- ‘The Edge’ (Tim’s favorite deathmatch level in QUAKE II or any other game), has over 50 trick jumps possible in the map. Tim only designed two of them, and the rest were discovered by the QUAKE II community.

Trick jumping is something you just don't see in most new games. What a shame.

No bump-mapping. No specular. That game probably sucked.

How I came up with my current name.

One day while I was playing Quake II, I believe I had some gay name like Soul Repear.
Then another person of the same name joined the same server. That wasn't so bad, but then a third person of the same name joined the server.
Now I knew it was time to come up with a new name.
I knew that in Quake II my favorite thing to do was throw frag grenades. So I knew that I wanted to have frag in my name somewhere.
I spent a good amount of time trying to come up with a name that had frag in it. I was almost at my wits end trying to think of a name.
Then while thinking about it, I started to flip through all my games that I had at the time. That's when I flipped to the game Carmageddon that the evil gods shined down on me.
That's the day that FragaGeddon was born.
