Exactly when and why did ppl start pretending...
Exactly when and why did ppl start pretending...
They weren't racist?...
When I was in high school(graduated 88). Racism was completely out in the open...sometime between then and at some point in the late 90's racism went into the closet...what caused this? Media or some event I missed? The Internet?
What's the story?...

Re: Exactly when and why did ppl start pretending...
I thought all white people in America were racist to some extent, due to their long history of practicing racial slavery and apartheid. that's not something you can shake off in a couple of generations
Re: Exactly when and why did ppl start pretending...
They are but they all act like racism is over..while hating black ppl in private

I love reverse racism, where the minority speak ill of the majorityscared? wrote:They are but they all act like racism is over..while hating black ppl in private
I see & experience it sometimes 'cause I will speak and mix with any race, religion or creed. It is enlightening & sometimes entertaining.
The phrase, "There but for the grace of (a) God go I" always in the back of my mind because I appreciate but for a quirk of fate, I could be in their shoes, if they have any

Racism being taboo is a step in the process. you just happened to live in a time that's going through the goofy period.scared? wrote:They weren't racist?...

Kinda like how many other things have found their way in our social conditioning through the generations.
But if it fails on an evolutionary level, racism might go as far as to be diagnosed like some kind of disease and prescribed against wrongfully, because the fact that you judge someone based on the coll of their skin will be beyond socially unacceptable.
But fear not, before we definitively figure out if hating color is part of our nature or not, we'll all be so intermixed... the point will be moot.
Re: Exactly when and why did ppl start pretending...
its way over the top here so common its calmly blatent!

Re: Exactly when and why did ppl start pretending...
I have to disagree with you here. First, that will take thousands of years, at least. Second, if we were all "the same color" people would simply find another way to differentiate one another, and that would be used by some people to feel superior to others. The color of your eyes, or if you have freckles or not. Who knows.Tsakali wrote:But fear not, before we definitively figure out if hating color is part of our nature or not, we'll all be so intermixed... the point will be moot.
Ethnocentrism is a bitch. It's exhibited all over the world. People in every single country believe they are better than "other people." It's not an American thing. It's a human thing.
We're still very primitive creatures. Sure, we have technology, and medicine, but look at the state of the world we live in. We're still just warring tribes. We're just hairless apes with big sticks, metaphorical or actual, to beat each other with. Tools of destruction or tools of oppression. Racism is just one of them.
Re: Exactly when and why did ppl start pretending...
true, the need to belong to a group, hence differentiate from others is not going away any time soon... maybe never... provided we are still classified as humans at that point.

americans make fun of other cultures,in order to hide the fact that they are completely ignorant of other cultures.

Thick, solid and tight in all the right places.

I think racism is getting more wrapped into some sort of weird way of reasoning. I get the idea that calling out someone for the color of their skin is no longer socially acceptable, but the "scapegoat" movement is becoming more rampant. Here in The Netherlands, a traditionally openminded culture, we see the rise of right wing politics through the likes of Geert Wilders. I think it's a trend in a larger part of Europe.
They represent people who have problems, mostly with work and income, and they need a scapegoat, so they single out groups of people and demonize them through (incorrect and shortsighted) arguments. The way people have been looking at Muslims has changed a lot in the last 10 years, and not for the better. It's not blatant racism, most people who support Wilders will deny actually having a problem with individual Muslims, but they do conjure up some crazy ideas about the Islam being a threat for our society.

Re: Exactly when and why did ppl start pretending...
logical fallacy...
Re: Exactly when and why did ppl start pretending...
not if it's true - and it probably is
Re: Exactly when and why did ppl start pretending...
the amount of people of a different race does not change the actual racism; there is no "reverse racism".Whiskey 7 wrote: I love reverse racism, where the minority speak ill of the majorityand usually quietly.

Just saying "reverse racism" is racist... Lol racists...
