Here's two irrelevant, old men to laugh at for a bit

Spielberg told students at USC they were vying to enter the film industry at a time when even established film-makers were struggling to get their projects into cinemas, and revealed that the Oscar-winning Lincoln came “this close” to being premiered on the US pay-TV network HBO. He said that many talented young directors were now considered “too fringey” for a cinematic release.

“That’s the big danger, and there’s eventually going to be an implosion – or a big meltdown,” Spielberg said. “There’s going to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen megabudget movies are going to go crashing into the ground, and that’s going to change the paradigm.”

lol Lucas bitching that Red Tails almost wasn't released. It was a horrible movie that was released probably when 10 other, much better projects weren't even green lit.

Those two old cunts can fuck off.

BTW...yesterday Steven Spielberg played and loved Watch_Dogs...and since his judgement of what constitutes "good" these days is pretty fucking awful I'm now really worried that our game will suck.

Oh dear :( Well, at least it wasn't Lucas saying that about your game, then you'd really know your product is shit.

I enjoyed the bit where they say 'Our work! On HBO! Can you believe that?' and not see how HBO makes much, much better things than Hollywood churns out.

Also the fact that these guys pretty much started the whole blockbuster thing in the first place, it was things like Jaws and Star Wars that initiated the megafunding trend... what a bunch of cunts.

So Spielberg walks into USC and scares the shit out of a bunch of students by telling them that they just wasted a bunch of time and money studying film when their industry is about to go thermonuclear and they'll all be out of a job and living in the street. Thanks for the inspiring speech.

“There’s going to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen megabudget movies are going to go crashing into the ground, and that’s going to change the paradigm.”

The paradigm shift is that overrated director/producers will be out of a job making way for new people who are more interested in making a film with plot rather than another mindless blockbuster.

And if there is an impending doom for Hollywood box offices, why would people pay even MORE for a movie ticket?

:olo: @ the hate.

I think all they were saying is there's going to be 2 types of films: cheap ones with cheap tickets and expensive ones with expensive tickets, which will be rarer than the expensive films of today.

Considering how relatively huge film budgets have become, that shouldn't be such bad news; the low budget films would still be pretty high budget compared to the films of yesteryear.

Basically all the students had to take away from that is that they shouldn't expect to be making big budget extravaganzas, cause those are going to be rarer than today.

this x 10. HBO has produced not only unquestionably the 1st and 2nd medal winners in the category 'greatest show of all time' (Wire, Deadwood) but also a strong contender for 3rd place too (GoT). meanwhile Spielberg and Lucas are a couple of washed up old hacks who haven't made anything decent since, respectively, the 90s and the 80s

For Spielberg and Lucas to get all bitchy about "their movies" having trouble getting distributed (gasp!!!) I think it simply proves beyond doubt that those two idiots are completely deluded from decades of surrounding themselves with people who never say "no" to them. They think everything they do is awesome and isn't in any way shit.

They're as divorced from reality as the average Republican politician.

After reading about George Lucas bitching about his problems getting Red Tails distributed, simply watch RedLetterMedia's review of the film - and how George Lucas really is out of touch from the rest of world behind his piles of money - and have a laugh:

I'd love to see Abbrams get given a 1 gazillion dollar budget and have his epic premiere on chan 4, back where you started you big time charlie cunt, but I think those 2 are talking out their arse.

Spielberg fucked up a story that had already been written and retold since 1938 and is living on his past reputation, no wonder people have started getting cold feet when he's on board. I'd argue Lucas and his movie experience completely disqualifies him from having any valid opinion n all, I know of 6 of his films with the 3 of them being under his sole control going up like a lead balloon.

Those 2 are part of the problem I have with the movie industry atm, shit stories being remedied with big effects or nostalgia. If they're getting stick because of that then good, shape up you pair of faggots.

Sounds like they're Jelly that Whedon and Abbrams got buckets of money and the keys to entire franchises, leaving indy and star wars to get raped in South Park.

Abrams is just as overrated as Spielberg and Lucas.

Aye but he knows how to sell shit without a story, I hope he gets raped by a klingon. Ridley Scott went the same way with promo n all.

I don't think it's fair to blame them alone. Things like Looper, Terminator Salvation, Expendables n all them are victims of the studios I reckon. Just think Lucas and Spielberg are talking out their bitter arseholes because someone else is getting all the perks as they're doing it better.
