School reunions: Been to any? Thoughts?

Post by Whiskey 7 »

My classmates from 40 years ago found me only a week or two ago for a 40th high school reunion.
Since I had moved address some 120 kilometres or so and changed all contact details, they located me through my parents.

I had been on organising committees for the 20 and 30 year reunions so I missed the start of this but never mind.

They gave me a list of those classmates proving difficult to find and I have had some success in tracing and then ''cold'' calling people I haven't seen or spoken to for that a40 years  Good fun and I must say a pleasant experience.

Time travel in a fashion for sure

I just wondered your thoughts re school reunions or any stories or memories you would like to share?

My two previous events were pretty quiet and I have to say, most faces didn't change, their voices still the same but a little quieter.

One or two exceptions where they had apparently grown older that the rest of us and grey hair a plenty all round.

Imagine how awkward it would be for Geoff if he went to a school reunion and people started asking him what he's done with his life.

I never got an invite to my 5 or 10 year but I doubt I would have gone anyways. Our 10 year was last spring at some shitty bar back home.

My 10 year was last year and I skipped it. If I wanted to see those people socially, then I would. Why force it?

School reunions certainly were a good idea in the past for people to get in touch and perhaps even rekindle some friendships, but with Facebook and other social media allowing people to share all that info about themselves online, reunions are really nothing but a formality to see who got fat and who got ugly...which you can for the most part find out on Facebook anyways.

Pretty much. I regularly hang out with the only people I care about from back in high school.

Interestingly, I only signed up for Facebook after being contacted.
I didn't find too many of my era there but there were a couple I did find there who were on the too hard to find list.

I even googled a name to find one (got 3) one unusual name and scored
Girls get married and change name making near impossible to find :smirk:

I've been to my 10th and 20th reunion. And I try to go to some of the annual events too. I find it nice to actually speak with people "in person" that you don't normally get to see. Reconnecting personally and forging advantageous business contacts is always a plus.

Top shelf genes and from great Anglo-German stock :D so seems I have a few years left.

Forgot to mention that I contacted some old classmates who just didn't want to know. Guess some people are like that :smirk:

Oh yes, and there was one guy I called after twenty years. He ended up being local to me, not more than a mile of couple of kilometers away. Another on that to find list that I had been walking past on my daily strolls. I had previously recognized him as someone I knew from somewhere, I just couldn't place the face until I was thinking along reunion lines and contacted.

Small world I guess.

People you bump into after 40 years

Today I was shopping in the local supermarket.....

We were at the milk fridge and there was this old gent, huge guy, quietly putting the milk into the cabinet. “Gawd he looks like Jones” I said to self, then mumbled to the Mrs, “I think that’s Steve Jones”. Perhaps he heard, giving me a slight sideways, corner of the eye look, but didn’t say anything.

I thought to self, I have to front this guy as it could be him so I moved to his left so I could get a better look. Still not sure I spoke up and said “excuse me sir….”. He turned around and I stared into his eyes, and still not really sure I said, “Steve…..Jones…..?....”, here he replied, yes! It was him.

I said “40 years Steve, you’re looking well..” He said he couldn’t chat too long and I understood. He was wearing a new staff uniform and cold weather jacket, guess he spends a lot of time in the cold rooms..

Guess we will catch up.

Got invited to one not long back but I keep in touch with mates that I still want to speak too, rest can go fuck themselves and if I seen a few of the teachers they'd have a beer bottle sticking out their neck
