If Doom was done today

Post by DTS »

I actually haven't played a "today" game like that, just read about them. Latest FPS I played was :q3: (CPMA)*.
So I can't say how true it is, I can't say "sad but true"; I say: That's what you guys have been playing? :olo:

I will say I played GTA3 for a bit and didn't like how the story got in the way of doing whatever you wanted. [Edit: By which I mean I got nowhere and stopped playing after a matter of minutes, most of which were spent watching the same cutscene over and over and trying to skip it.]

I blame GFY, cause he works in the videogame industry.

*I didn't count Quake Live. Come to think of it, the skill select was a bit on-rails "waypoint"-led.

What kind of idiot would waste 19 minutes watching that when you get the drift of it after 10 seconds?... What kind of total fucking loser wastes countless hours making that bullshit that no one will even watch?...

Blame consoles and the morons who buy them. Everything is dumbed down for them.

I like how he put path indicators every 10 feet...just in case the player got "lost" walking down a linear hallway. :)

true in a sense, but shooters were being dumbed down long before console shooters were a thing.
I blame the oversaturation of the fps genre. people want to power through a game in time for the next bro-shooter.
Also, after HalfLife showed us how it's done (twice), the other publishers suddenly wanted to tell A Story. and noone's going to bother with finishing their generic Story if there are such roadblocks as 'pathfinding' or 'difficulity' in place.

Actually, Geoff's right. This video is exploiting cliches that have been pointed out back in 2010 already and many times since then. It's not bringing anything new to the table. It's slow, boring to watch and takes a loooong time to bring a point across. And the description of the video links to a part 2.

So yeah, Geoff's right. If it takes you 29 minutes of video, plus a part 2 with probably another 30 mins of video to understand the point that's being made then you're a stoopid moron.

While shooters might have been moving away from the pure "hard core" audiences, such as those gamers who played Q3A back in 1999, it didn't go into stupid-ville until consoles took it over (*cough* Halo *cough*) and made it "a thing" for everyone, not just the hard core.

But yeah, oversaturation, impatience in the audience...these are the things that gave us what we have today. But ultimately, I still blame the consumer (you already knew that) because they're the people driving the gaming industry to crank out these things every nine months...quality be damned. Consumers allowed themselves to be beta testers, allowed the industry to basically turn malignant towards itself and, in their endless quest to satiate their never-ending entitled boredom, they allowed the industry to become malignant against its own customers, who only have themselves to blame. The games industry is still a business chasing profit and will make what sells.
