So what is the story here?
I ask because an icon just appeared bottom left hand corner on my W7 Ultimate (64bit) and I clicked it.
It offers Windows 10 for free
This cannot be true can it?
I will search the subject but ask for thoughts.

Short story: yes it's true. Windows 7 and 8 owners get a free upgrade.

So can I do a format/reinstall and put a fresh free copy of win10 on or do I get one upgrade which I can apply once to my copy of windows 7 and then that's it?

The latter I think, tho even unverified versions of win7/8 will upgrade.
a disc release is planned later this year.

Windows 10 looks to be pretty awesome, let's hope they don't ruin it. It looks to be everyone 8 should have been.

I probably will.
I wonder if I should do a clean install of my W7 before
I guess the W10 process will do it all anyway.
Better start backing up my stuff.

I'm definitely doing it. I've been running the tech preview and updates for a few months now. Much better than 8 imo.

Looks like you are. Big reason to upgrade is security.

I will wait a bit before upgrading. Win7 is working just fine for me right now, and I'm sure there will be bugs and problems in the beginning that I would rather avoid.

I'll wait for the Win10 Service Pack 1 before I switch over.

Yes, I read the free upgrade offer is open for a year so not a bad idea at all Transient

Hmm, was planning on installing it but that sounds like a good reason to wait a bit.
