Quake 3 Arena Sound issue?

Ok, I've got Q3A and point 1.32 patch, and when I start the game it runs fine, but no sound. Then when I try and start a map, it fails with the error 'Error: Length of /sounds/feedback/hit.wav is 0' and goes back to the main menu. I reinstalled, but instead of failing, all the sounds come out as loud, low pitched static.
Also, I've heard that this happens with illegal copies. Mine is fully legal, to my knowledge, found it in a cicuit city bargain bin.

As far as I can tell, it's just Quake. The machine is used for DJing at clubs and parties, but that is normally through a USB connection. It gives me the same problem with the USB soundcard.

Ok, I think I finally found the problem. It seems that Q3A expects sounds to be a 22kbps WAV file, but most of mine are 33 or even 135 for music files. Does this sound right ot anyone?

Sry to bring back an old thread, but i have the exact same problem. Did the 22kbs thing work, and if it does how do i convert the files to 22kbs? Or if that didn't work what does?

edit q3config.cfg
seta s_khz "22"
could be a directx issue
run this program
type in the start/run box
dxdiag.exe

No its definately not directx or sound drivers because I have no problems like this in any other games. Im pretty sure it has to do with the actual sound files but i dont know why they dont work. When I go into the sound folder to play them, namely the feedback/hit.wav one, nothing plays. Most files play fine though. Idk what to do.

so you figure it's a quake3 problem eh and it started after installing the quake3 pointrelease1.32
all i can suggest is backup your mods configs and maps of quake3 un-install quake3 then delete quake3 folder re-install quake3
your pak0.pk3 may have a problem .. you could simply from the quake3 cd replace the possibly corrupted one you have installed.

I hear a lot of this "Length of /sounds/feedback/hit.wav is 0" and what puzzles me is that the actual location is "/sound/feedback/hit.wav" (sound with no 's')
