ram question

Post by SoM »

my old setup was 768 PC2700

new setup is

1024 PC3200 dual channel

but i havent really noticed THAT much of an improvment

only gained around100-150 3d01 marks..

so i was thinking of sticking in the 512 pc2700 just to get more ram since the gain was so small even tho it would run at 2700 speeds..

opinions ?

i wouldnt make this topic but i'm lazy at inserting a ram module ATM so just wanted some opinions..

:p :p :p

well what processor do you have?

Your computer might only be running at 2700 if your CPU is running at 333 MHz and the CPU/RAM could be running 1:1 ratio (best ratio) so the 3200 might be running 2700 and then adding the 512 wouldn't change anything

You might also consider the fact that you might have a bottleneck in your system and that the 1024 MB made little difference from the 768 MB and that the 1539 MB would make little to no difference. For the time being 1024 MB RAM is sufficient for any gaming and more is only used in video, photo, and audio editing.

So I recommend that you use the 512 MB PC 2700 in another computer to boost it, if you have another computer, or send it to me :).

corsair PC3200 512x2
Asus A7N8X D2.0

i believe the XP2500+ is still at 333MHz

+ i have a BFG 6800OC unlocked to GT speeds and OC'd a lil :icon14:

Dual channel runs at 1:1 by default. From what I've read (and experienced) running at at a different ratio than this can cause instability.

Check out CPU-Z to see what ratio its running at but chances are its only 333. Adding the other stick will only slow it down to 266.

Also check the latency on the RAM. You can have PC 3200, but the cas might be high.....as in poor Ram and this will hurt you.

I thought the Athlon XP/Socket A didn't support dual channel? .. or am I thinking about Socket 754?

Plus I guess 3Dmark01 don't put that much strain on the memory bandwidth. Try some other benchmarks.
