All TVs must have digital tuners!?

Post by bitWISE »

Wtf?

http://apnews.excite.com/article/200506 ... 50QG0.html
The lack of digital-capable television sets has been a major impediment to Congress' tentative deadline of December 2006 to complete the transition from traditional analog TV signals to digital. The 1997 law setting that deadline permits it to be extended in any market until 85 percent of the homes have a digital TV.
Why is Congress so concerned that we have digital cable? For some reason I can't stop thinking about that XFiles episode where people become brainwashed by the television.

man, talk about old.

the FCC, Congress..same thing.

besides, 85% of the homes in a given market is still a long ways away for alot of areas.

yes.

the extra over the air bandwidth will be most likely utilized for HD programming.

I heard that the military was going to assume control over the frequencies currently used by analog tv, which is why the govenment is setting deadlines for a digital conversion. I don't remember where I read that though

umm, i believe its 85% of the market is covered by digital signals. I think thats already done. Nothing to do with who has digital tv's. Anyway i heard like 80% of people who watch tv get it from cable, which means they will be unaffected. The only people it will affect are the people who dont have cable and who watch free over the air tv. And yeah, they want to free up the spectrum for other usage. You can fit like 5 digital channels on the same amount of spectrum it takes to run one channel now.

well atleast digital services should drop in price , because i don't know alot of people that would pay 80 per month to get cable.

they either drop prices or their bread and butter income will suffer
