Have just invested in a PCI PATA RAID card (4 Channel) to give a quick boost to my ageing computer and PATA disks.
Currently, I've set my 40Gb and 60Gb drives in a single striped RAID 0 configuration giving me a single ~80Gb drive.
Looking forwards, when I hop up the PC I'm considering buying 2 SATA drives, getting onboard SATA RAID on the mobo, and using this card + old/cheap IDE drives in a JBOD configuration to give me a massive file storage drive.
Does this seem practical? I figure I can fit 8 PATA drives of my choosing into this JBOD array and probably cram in a terabyte of storage with relatively little expense (given I'll be upgrading in maybe a year). I can use the SATA array for the system partition and get max speed from that, too.
Would I see much of a performance boost if I used 4 SATA drives instead of 2 large ones? Does matching the drives up to the same model/batch give a performance increase too? I've heard it can have an effect.
Anyone else have a similar setup/used JBOD before?
Best RAID configuration?
Best RAID configuration?
