There's just one public server where I have a decent ping, but it had sv_punkbuster 1. So I dl'd and installed pb. The first time I connected, it gave me this error:

Punkbuster client warning: PB kicks for nonstandard characters adn all PB restrictions on this server.
MarquisdeSade you have been permanently banned from this game server. :icon23:

I was like WTF! It also gave some global GUID BAN something...

what do i do now?

find a new server, honestly.

Do you have a valid CD key, i.e. one that didn't come out of Kazaa or a keygen?

If you keep away from anything alt+? and just use the stuff on the keyboard you're safe.

Because your CD-key is checked online against the master database over at iD's. No key, no play.

But I didnt do anything. I just joined the server, and in less than a second, pb kicked/banned me with this message.

Thank god there are some servers which dont have punkbuster. Anyway, I can't seem to get much less than 80-100 ping. What settings do I need to play close-to-normally (i.e, use LG, rail without leading etc.) apart from these:

cl_maxpackets 25
rate 10000
snaps 40
cl_timenudge -15

Looks pretty decent. You might want to set cl_timenudge to -50. Will make the other players look choppy but you'll have to lead less. PS: 80-100 really isn't that bad. Back in the Q2 days we were happy if we only pinged 220

Your first problem with the PB error Which I didn't see the exact error.

Most likey your being kicked for the following error:

"#151 - Extended ASCII Characters in Player Name (Resolution: use regular letters, numbers and symbols in the player name or play on a different server)"

Like Survivor said, "If you keep away from anything alt+? and just use the stuff on the keyboard you're safe."

Meaning all the alt+248 which comes up with :icon10: ° and such.

Show us what name you used when you tried to connect to the server that permanent banned you.

By the way. The server you went on was setup to ban people after a certain time which didn't meet the server requirements.

Say for instance you have some server admin that wants to make
everyone come on the server with a name of "Dumb-ass". He can restrict using PB everyone not meeting that requirement from playing on his server.

The GUID ban. Globally. Well since PB has been working on some database lists of cheaters and other invalid keys. You might well have been banned globally just because a server admin made up there config that way. Sucks if they did.

Anyway, my first post quoted the pb error verbatim, except for the last line which was about the guid.

About me not deserving help from this forum: I would have bought the game if my neighbourhood store had it when i started q3, and I dont have the means to buy it online now. I've bought original game/software cds before, and please dont say that none of you've used any pirated software/game/music ever. My point is not to start a noobrape... I'll just go away. Don't assume that I'm a habitual cracked software user jsut because my q3 cdkey isnt valid.
