Looking to setup a simple forum for work.

Post by Iccy (temp) »

Im running a 2003 server at home and im trying to create a forum for everyone at work to meet on and talk about viruses and spyware they found or to archive ways to do whatever out in the field. Nothing too fancy.

Im trying to find a windows compatible forum for this, but everyone i have talked to suggests linux. While i love linux, im rusty and since im studying for my msca every night now, i dont have time to relearn all the linux just to setup a forum.

Any thoughts? And no, EZboard is the debil.

phpBB2 is what I use for mine (I have a forum for answering all manner of science questions).

This board uses it as well. You don't have to be very linux-literate to run it...and it is very customizable.

Agreed. I've got one set up on my webspace just to toy around with. Pretty easy to get going and customize.

You don't need linux to run a forum...Just install Apache, PHP, and MySQL. There are a lot of guides out there that show you how to do all three at once.

Then I'd go with phpBB. We use it at work as part of an innovation initiative. (I've actually created my own forum software from scratch that mirrors the old Q3W functionality but I never finished it or I would let you have it.)

Well i was hoping to us IIS cause its what i am learning I dont suppose it can be made to work on that ?

Another question. If i do go with apache cause it wont work on IIS and do what bitwise said, if i setup a second server and run the forum on that with apache, will there be a conflict of the site/forum with the IIS that i need to have running for my domain excersices or can they run at the same time with in the same network.

I'm pretty sure PHP and MySQL work with IIS as well but I've never had the desire to use IIS.

Don't Microsoft still offer a completely free ASP.NET bulletin board? Dunno if that's any use, but here: http://www.telligentsystems.com/Solutions/Forums/
