Pink Floyd is incredible

Post by R00k »

So I just got around to watching the Live8 Floyd performance. These guys are just incredible. I know it will never EVER happen, but I would love to see these guys go on one last tour together.
I saw Gilmour and the guys on the Pulse tour, and I saw Waters on his last tour when he came through. Both shows were unbelievable, but just the sight of all 4 of them on stage together tonight blew my mind, and their songs and performance were just as powerful as they ever were. I can't believe I'll never see them all in person. :tear:

Watching the show tonight it was pretty evident that Roger was happy to be there, and enjoyed being on stage with them again. But you could tell from Gilmour's body language that he wasn't quite as into it. It was pretty harsh the way he seemed to avoid looking at Waters through the whole set. And I may have imagined it, but during Comfortably Numb when he was singing the "Your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying," bit, it looked like he shot Waters a hard look.

It's so fucking sad to see a bitter dispute still having this kind of effect on such a wonderful group. So sad. :(

But the show was incredible. I thought I knew the whole story about Waters and the band, but I'm going to go read up on it a little, because it has to be about more than the impression I was under.

Great fucking band.

They were the only ones at that show that I would have wanted to see. Been a fan for over 20 years.

They were amazing at Live8 :icon14: I really liked the shoutout to Syd before Wish You Were Here, although its clear that Roger's voice isn't what it used to be :( I'm really glad Roger did sing a bit; I'm really getting tired of the all Gilmour Pink Floyd (as seen on PULSE).

I really would've liked to hear more than 4 songs, some stuff off Meddle or Animals maybe. Incredible show overall.

What else did they play other than Comfortably Numb?

Apparently creative differences between Waters and Gilmour. Happened around the time of The Wall. Guess they both wanted to be in control of where Floyd was going. Could be wrong on this, bit rusty on my floyd trivia.

Money, Wish You Were Here, and Breathe. Great performances.

If you go to http://music.aol.com and go to the Live8 link toward the bottom, you can listen to the full songs (and performances of the other artists as well). Doesn't seem to work with Mozilla, but IE played them.

You can also find a torrent of a higher quality DivX recording.

In a nutshell Richard Wright wasn't pulling his weight after The Wall. He left the band for The Final Cut, Roger Waters got fed up and left after that, and then Wright came back. Roger and David got all bitter. Roger sued for the Floyd name and lost. Etc etc.

Basically, Waters started taking more and more creative control over the group. He fired Richard Wright from the band after dropping most of the keyboards from their newer music.
On the inside of the last album they made, the credits read something like "by Roger Waters, performed by Pink Floyd."
I remember hearing that at one point, Waters and Gilmour argued so much that they refused to be in the studio at the same time, and started recording all their parts separately.

Later on there was a bitter legal dispute about rights to perform as Pink Floyd. Gilmour and Mason (the drummer) won, but Waters got the rights to some of the band's artwork/imagery/stage props, as well as rights to the last album they recorded. Wright eventually rejoined Mason and Gilmour, and they were the ones who toured as Pink Floyd on the Pulse tour - everybody but Waters.

It was pretty nasty from what I understand. :(

Ahh, thanks. :icon14: @ Kahuna too. Always really liked Wish You Were Here. One of the first Floyd songs I learned on the guitar.

i haven't immersed myself in the floyd universe to a great extent, but i love the music.

When i was a kid, i listened to my parents' tapes and the line "a momentary lapse of reason", and in particular the melody associated with that lyric, stuck in my head for over a decade.

finally tracked down the song, by acquiring the album of the same name. Fell in love with it - some awesome tracks, specially "learning to fly" and "terminal frost"

Then after a couple years i discovered that floyd had more than one album, and got a hold of "the division bell" - wow. "high hopes" is such a beautiful song, but i also love the opening third of the album.

Then darkside of the moon - definitely quality music, but after a while i realized that i'd never "get" the hype - you just had to be there at the time and experience the cultural force around it to "get it".

The wall - same sort of deal, but again - some fantastic music in there. The ending of "the happiest days of our lives" (where they break into that frenzy about how the teachers' " psychopathic
wives would thrash them within inches of their lives") and the opening bass to "another brick in the wall (Part II)" are fucking phenomenal.

Wish you were here - again, i didn't experience the emotional rollercoaster of following Syd's spiral out of the band so the music didn't have as much meaning to me.

Animals - this is some of the best music i've ever heard in my life.

I'm pretty sure Sid Barret had something to do with the split as well.

Syd left the band very early, before DSOTM, The Wall, WYWH, etc. He had nothing to do with the split.

Syd left the band after a mental breakdown after their first album: The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

During "A saucerful of secrets" you see the 5 man floyd line up. Gilmore taking over Syd's place in the band.

Some albums are released: Ummaguma, atom heart mother, meddle, DSOTM, wish you were here, animals.

Waters later on presented the "Wall" concept and "the pros and cons of hitchhiking" as possibilities for the next album. The Wall is chosen, the latter is released as a solo project by waters.

The breakup then occurred over what the next album will be. Waters wanted to release "The Final Cut" (The Wall B-sides), and Gilmore wanted to steer away from "The Wall" in order to be more involved in the creative side of the band. Roger and Wright left, Waters sued for the name and lost.

Gilmore, Wright, and Mason later made two albums and toured as Pink Floyd.

All members (including Syd in his poor health) released solo albums at some point.
