Actually, he lost a lot of weight sometime in the last decade. Remember, the last time we saw him on screen in a major role was 1994.

Since then, he had a child (!!!) and dropped the weight.

Yes, just because he was in Star Trek and was a nice guy. Television shows connect people with each other and the characters in the show. Iconic shows like Star Trek (It was on for forty years... Hello?) connect the fans with the people.

James Doohan helped start one of the biggest pop culture phenomena of the last 100 years.

What other TV shows have been on that long? Gunsmoke was pretty close, right?

Grow up. Everyone has seen Star Trek. If that weren't true, that battle in The Cable Guy wouldn't have been enjoyed in unanimity. Stupid alts.
