A little new Quake 4 information?

I was talking to a friend that works at Gamestop today on the phone and he, knowing I'm a Quake guy, was like, "Hey, we got the Quake 4 promo boxes in recently. They're really cool. And now you can preorder it, too."

So I went over there and checked out the box and everything. Was cool. And I paid for the collector's edition, so I just have to wait until it's released.

Anyway, boxes don't usually come on the shelf until it's within a few months of release, right? And their (Gamestop's) release date is now October 11, 2005.

I know these things aren't always accurate and of course, it won't be official until it it is official from Raven/id. But still, that they've got the boxes and a date, the date seems to makes sense at least.

From what I've seen and heard it will be a great addition to the Quake series. It's obviously gonna be fast in multiplayer and it's gonna have a somewhat ok singeplayer story and from the screenshots I've seen it won't be any darker than Quake 2 was, so all the D3 talk is crap. I just hope it's not too similar to Q3. I love Q3, but I want something new. I want to learn something new.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic about the red armour stroggs or not, but if you remember some of the weaker enemies in Quake2, I'm pretty sure they're flesh coloured and wearing redish armour.

Ssssh don't use logic. It'll confuse them.

Cool. I refuse to pre-pay for any game. It's all gravy money for the game stores. They try and pull this kind of high pressure sales shit everytime I go in there and make it sound like if I don't pre-order the game I won't be able to buy it for months after it's release. Funny, I've still been able to get every single major release on the day it came out by just going to one of the department stores (like Target) and picking it up. It's also annoying when those pricks ask me if I need any help finding anythign in the store - 'yea sir, I am really baffled by your alphabetical, system specific organizational strategy here.' or they'll try and lure you into the pre-paying bullshit by asking if there are any games you are looking forward too. No matter what game I answer with (for example - i CAN'T WAIT FOR 'THAT'S SO RAVEN' FOR THE GBA) they will say ..."yea, you better pre-order, we've got a LOT of people who also want THAT'S SO RAVEN FOR THE GBA.'"

It's kind of like when I go into the health food store and the dilhole behind the counter tries to explain supplements to me, and how they work, without me asking for help. God I hate people who work in stores.
Sometimes.

back on topic - the indoor level shots I've seen look like they could have been taken right from D3.

How is the multiplayer supposed to be in q4? Can we be expecting rocket jumps, plasma climbing, strafe jumping, etc?

Those screens look alright. At least the strogg will have variations in body armor according to those pics.

To read my post, copy/paste busetibi's post and change name to "o'dium".

Seriously, its just NOT Quake 2, its more like "standard future FPS".

Its not hard to keep the original feel of a game in an updated engine, so why is it so hard for some people to do so? (Doom 3, Quake 4, DE:IW, HL2, Unreal 2 to name a few).

Yet some really do shine past this and get a great game that keeps it just the same as the original (Max Payne 2, SOF2, Tomb Raider (To a certain degree), Mario (even though most games were 100% different, you just KNEW it was mario).

It really does look like they just made another sci fi FPS and slapped the name on there to sell. Not even the weapons/armor are the same, and this is at the same TIME as Quake 2 really... So how is that possible?

At least in Halo 2 they gave you an excuse as to why everything looked different.

''The multiplayer experience in Quake4 is more akin to Quake3:Arena. Die-hards will feel right at home'' Doubt it's right though.

Yeah the physics are Quake 3 style i.e. strafe jumping, rocket jumping, even nail jumping and bounce pads... But as zyte said... You know, take it with a grain of salt...

but the pre-order gifts are can be quite cool.

case in point: zelda OOT master quest if you pre-pay for zelda windwaker.

or poster/shirt/whatever/gold edition for pre-paying for Zelda OOT.

sometimes there are a few neat freebies.

Not really... There was 2 zelda disks. One that came with wind waker when you bought it anyways, and one that came with the cube when you bought it with zelda.

I have both :p

Fantastic disks too, containing OOT and MM, plus a hefty supply of original ownage.

Fantastic for the fans.

This CE of Quake 4 better be good. The CE of Doom 3 xbox was nice but had little content. It should of been like the CE of Halo 2; Jam packed with making of's, deleted scenes and concept art.

Oh and it needs to be in one of those metal tins too. No more 87 CD's this time, thanks. DVD all the way FFS...

Actually, it's the lighting and intensity of the normal maps that is ugly.

If they were to bring down the normal maps to 60% and realistically light the game, it'd look pretty real as long as the assets were modelled correctly.

I totally know what you mean. I remember when the Dreamcast was coming out in the US, that summer, the sales guys were talking like it was going to be the end of the world if you didn't at lesat put a $50 deposit in on one. But this time, I just went ahead and bought it since I'm such a fanatic. I don't figure that Quake 4 is going to be sold out _ever_ in the town I live in, but I am glad it's behind me. Now I just go and pick it up.

As for Quake 4 multiplayer, to add to what others have said:

Tim Willits said the movement in Quake 4 multiplayer (not sp) is "mathematically the same" as Quake III. Mathematically the same, that sounds like it is the same thing, and not just "this feels similar to Quake III." But yeah, we'll see. And there is nailclimbing instead of plasma climbing.

I think you can imagine how the nailgun is going to replace the plasma gun in terms of functionality.

And the id guys (no Raven guys ever talk about this game, weird) have said over and over that Quake III multiplayer is really what they're striving for in Quake 4's mp segment.

I think this is infact the most retarded thing you've ever said, and we're drawing from a BIG pool of ignorance here.

I'm pretty sure it's Q3:TA, not Q3A they aim for.
