For some reason the brightness in quake is the same as it is on the desktop...I have tried upping the gamma and the brightness but nothing works.
I use an ATI 9600XT with the drivers that came with it. Is that the problem?

I've got the same problem since i installed Windows XP insted Win98
I hate it!
I think it is because Quake can`t change standart XP's palette.
And i'm still trying to fix it.

r_ignorehwgama 1
that should be able to fix it no problem, After that simply use the r_gama command and brighten it up

Damn, why would you use the cd drivers! Those are ancient. And the command that amidy provided should fix you right up.

I've found another way: type in console:
r_OverBrightBits 0
It helped me.
Now Gamma adjusts like it was before.
