Can't see anything in HL2

Post by JooKed »

This isn't really a Hl2 question, but this is the game I want to play in general.

Ok, I have a bougth version of HL2 and it installed fine without any problems. But when I go to play it, all the enemies and models don't show up on my screen. Even in the main menu, I can't see the guards walking around and I only see a floating light blinking red and I guess thats supposed to be that thing that alerts the guards of your presence / blinds you. I don't see the poles in the ground, and when I start a new game, I don't see that guy with the brif case or the damn seats in the train. I can see the buildings / structures / floor around me though.

Specs

AMD 64 3200+ Xp home
1gb PC3200 ram
200gb HD
Intergrated 128 mb graphics.
e-Geforce 6800 128mb 8x agp - replaced the integrated graphics

I THINK I have the right Nvidia drivers. When I check in device manager, it says the 6800 is working properly, and the driver is 7.7.7.7 (even though I downloaded and installed the 77.77 drivers from the Nvidia site) .

This problem applys to other games too (IGI 2). But this problem does not occure when I play Serious Sam. Currently, my computer case is open, and the card/PSU seems to be in correctly.

is the intergrated videocard disabled? Via bios or windows?

also, Connect up to steam and update HL2. there has been quite a few updates released for it.

Mind telling me how I do that? What I did was restart windows and press F1. Then I went to the Advanced tab and I changed the video thing from PCI to AGP. That didn't work.

Press Windows Button and pause. then click on the hardware tab, then click on Device manager.

Dubble Click on where it says "Display Adapters" You will see the two of them sitting there, Right click on the onboard Jobby and Select Disable.

i would recommend for you to disable it right from the bios and etc, but you would need to get in contact with your hardware vendor or what ever support place and get them to guide you through it.

The onboard video isn't in the Display Adapters area. All it says is Nvidia GeForce 6800.

sounds like a gamma problem .. try modifying your HL2 configuration files manually or if you can see the menus raise the gamma "Brightness".

ther may be a tweak like quake3's "ignoreHWgamma"

check HL2 websites for gamma tweaks

These were the first few minutes of starting the first level. There is a lot of commotion going on, and I keep bumping into invisible things.

AHAHA. Aparantly, I invented a new wallhack for BF2. Its still in its testing stage. :p :p :icon23: I am shooting at a wall or smomething... but I can see the trees and shrubs behind it.

I found out that my integrated video was a SiS mirage2. I looked in add/remove programs and saw SiS VGA utilities. I don't know if this is the problem or what. But it won't let me uninstall anyway. Probably because I used the driver cleaner on my computer, and it deleted files that are needed for the uninstallation.

Go into your bios, turn off your integrated video..

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I am now sick.

Stupid question. But how do I do that?

At the startup screen, I press F1 a cuople times and the setup menu comes up. I see a whole bunch of options to change, but NOTHING says anything about SiS Mirage2 integrated, or even Geforce 6800.

I saw "onboard 1394" and I disabled that. That didn't work either.
I also changed this one option from PCI to AGP/onboard and that didn't work.

1394 is your firewire

Anyways, it SHOULD be in there under "onboard graphics something or other" just set it to disabled.. surf aroudn your bios, make sure it SAYS onboard video or onbaord shared video, before you disable it.. :)

Nope, didn't find squat. The only think remotley clost to that is onboard audio. What is going on here?

Update of the Bios? Sounds kinda iffy though. Geek.com said this too.

Just write down everything in your bios that has a variable, and post it here.

if software can have bugs why can't the bios ?

i always upgrade the bios .. anyway i would definetly look into the bios for some setting that may cause this.

-disable fastwrites "sidebanding " then test
-perhaps agp speed was messed with
-agp voltage was messed with

video card may be flawed
video drivers may be flawed "upgrade and check websites for known issues such as yours"

doesn't happen in serious sam may mean the programmers didn't use a new feature on your video card like an Advanced Pixel Shaders "bad example"

check out your video card display properties and try lowering the quality or improving the quality of the graphics in opengl and directx games

too hot inside your computer case or video card is overclocked

Um.. i constantly update my bios.. if fixes compatability issues and what not..

Anyone who says that its bad is a fucking retard..

Anyways, the reason i was having you look into your bios for onboard was because you couldnt "uninstall" your "sis onboard' video, which i doubt is really causing issues, but its more of a personal issue having something installed using resources and not doing anything..

As for the video thing.. totally uninstall your video drivers, grab a driver cleaner, and totally kill anything video related..

REDOWNLOAD (not reuse your old download) the newest drivers, reinstall them.. i was having some really stupid issues with my video drivers as well, mostly video playback, but still, reinstalling my nvidia drivers DID help..

I did around 5 hours of searching, and I found out this one guy had a similar problem. He fixed it up getting some chipset drivers for his mobo. So, how exactly do I do that?

I have Belarc Advisor on, and my board is a AsusTek Computer INC. Salmon 1.3. But I have no clue what drivers to install and such.

OH SHIT.

OMF OMFG.

I installed some randon AMD 64 driver and then I turned on HL2 for the 50th time. IT WORKED!!!!
I would have never thought it would be a driver issue that wasn't related to video. WOOOOOOOT! Even though I found out how to fix it, thanks for trying.
