I'm a bit surprised by how easily Theon Greyjoy is convinced to simply go forth and slay the folk that raised him and that in the name of his so-called father that gave him away as a young boy. It just seems odd that he isn't struggling with his loyalty between the two factions. What's up with that?

Yup, Geoff's right on the money there.
Ned suppressed an uprising of the Greyjoys and took Theon as his ward to prevent Greyjoy Sr. from doing so again.

i'd spoiler the fuck out of this, but instead i'll just agree with goof. greyjoy is a massive twat-monkey. it's painful to watch him fuck up repeatedly. his sister is enough of a motherfucker to make up for his consistent twattery though, so i'll suffer through his chapters until someday someone will hopefully put his twat head on a spike.

He seemed steamed enough at his dad to me. I quote:

Quote:
You gave me away! Your boy! Your last boy! You gave me away like I was some dog you didn't want

Perhaps his dad didnt have a choice like you described but that wasnt apparent to the viewer and certainly not how Theon experienced it.

It's sometimes hard to convey through dialogue and visuals what can be conveyed trivially through text in a book.

Exactly. Maybe in the book it was described that he was kidnapped, but in the TV series it was explicitly and unambiguously stated that Theon's father gave him away.
And even so, right up until he came back home he seemed loyal to the Starks. With the snap of a finger that loyalty is washed away. I found that a bit odd and slightly disappointing. Then again, he's probably been a loser all his life and he's grabbing this opportunity with both hands to prove himself worthy.

He wasn't kidnapped; in modern parlance, he was taken hostage. Being the oldest child of Balon and male, he's his heir by the rules of the land. In fact, in the book, it's made very clear that Theon wants to impress his father. You get a little of that in the TV show, but I'm sure it was easier for me to see having read the books.

I thought they conveyed that very well in the series actually. Anyway, taking hostages is something that happened quite a bit in the dark ages, it's a good way of insuring yourself against trickery of your underlings / rivals and a whole lot cheaper than war. You'd have to be some sort of moran not to grasp the concept.

Also i was never confused about his loyalties, that is to say, i understand he's more than a bit confused about it himself. But he's made his choice now it seems.

Tonights episode is possibly the best so far. The first scene with Theon at Winterfell was fucking great...

he clearly is struggling. he's just a huge floppy cunt, so his struggles haven't gotten him very far. too busy trying to please people into respecting him to actually accomplish anything respectable.

I agree, best episode this season so far :D

Did Littlefinger recognize Arya? I like to think he did, he's the sort of fellow who enjoys knowing secrets purely for the sake of knowing secrets - he's not picking any sides, just traveling across Westeros dispensing (un)helpful advise.

I think he did, the way he changed the topic of discussion to Stark's daughters with that cunning look on his face made it seem like he knew Lannisters finally had both girls in their possession. He's trying to play his cards right.

That's what I meant. Tywin has no idea but they have both girls and Baelish possibly knows it.
