Best 1v1 maps

Post by Infernis »

In my quest for competitive maps, I wondered if some of you might be willing to list your personal favorites here. It can be either stock or custom, Quake 3 or 4. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Check out the CPMA map packs. It's just over 100mb worth of maps... some of them are kinda iffy, but the majority of them are pretty well done.

They aren't all 1-on-1, and the list is kind of out of date since I haven't updated in a while, but here's my list of Kickass Maps. Warning: I'm picky and weird, and the list is subjective and illogical and everyone will probably find something on there to gripe about. :)

I've been told that Pretend Girlfriend is pretty damn solid for tourney. I can't take complete credit for that, since the map is a rebuild of the great Q2 tourney map Pretend Best Friend by Than, which I can't seem to find a link to at the moment. :(

Edit: the linkage on a lot of those is dead, but you can probably find them via Google or LvL...

Q4:
Monsoon l4dm2_1 (getting tired of it, but it IS a great map), Placebo Effect wvwq4dm1 (it's everywhere, but still)
Lost Fleet TMP (Often underrated, if you ask me.)

Oh, and "Grinder" (gdlk4tourney1v2). Of course. :icon25:

Notice I didn't pick any remakes? There are some fun ones, but I think the best tourney maps for Q4 reflect the fact that it's a new game; crouch sliding changes the gameplay a lot.

I don't think trying to find which maps are considered good/fun is the way to go... Trying to find WHY they are is (the basics).

Maybe these links have been pasted all over this forum but there's always room for a few more:

Mapping guide (this is for CPM, but most of it goes for VQ3/Q4 as well - VERY well structured and overall guide) (note: the guide is continued on another page)
Lunaran's design theory (a link to this guide is also mentioned in the Challenge Pro mapping guide, but I name it anyway because it's so useful)

If these basics are applied with some thought behind it, there is no restriction and you don't end up with a map that "looks like this other map".

I thought I was the only one who liked Fleet :D One of my favs, but it gets a lot of smack talked about it.

For q4:
Phrantic, Placebo, Ruiner are all good.

q3:
aerowalk, blood run, pro-tourney6 (best map ever made), cpm1a, etc. Lots of other good ones, maybe I will make a list of underappreciated tourney maps for this thread.

haha that's funny--lost fleet was always my favorite map from q4 too...

I haven't played the TMP remix--what did they change?

Item placement, mostly.. added a grenade launcher, too. And all the TMP maps have more "performance" lighting than the stock maps, but it still looks not too bad..

Like GODLIKE said, the TMP version of Lost Fleet has an item placement that doesn't suck and performance that sucks less.

That being said, Lost Fleet is indeed fun for most players; the problem was when 'competitive' players with 50-70% rail would play it, things tended to be very 1-dimensional.

Sorry if it took me some time to reply. My computer broke down and I had to buy and build a new one. Luckily I'm up and running again.

I thank you all for your replies. I now have a comprehensive list of quality maps to show me how it's done. I'm much obliged for this list.

Thanks again.

Spookmineer: I'm reading those guides as we speak. Although they're really usefull it helps to see the real thing if you know what I mean?
