John From Cincinnati

Post by bitWISE »

Anyone watching this new HBO series? http://www.hbo.com/johnfromcincinnati/

I'm really loving it. Lots of big actors, great characters, great dialog, and so far a very fresh plot. Only on episode two so hop on OnDemand and catch up for next Sunday!

The website doesn't really elude to it, but the show appears to be more of a fantasy than a drama. The character John is some kind of angel/prophet/alien and there have been a few supernatural occurrences. The show seems to have far too much cursing (from the guy who made Deadwood) to be religiously motivated so I dunno what to think yet.

is this worth having not delivered by truck in the ted stevens manner? there's fuck all to watch right now...
Just north of the border, in a tired coastal town, live three generations of the Yosts, surfing royalty turned society misfits. The Yosts' reign and reputation, once defined in the curl of a perfect wave, have been eroded by years of bad luck, addiction and hubris. But just as things are looking like they can't get worse, a stranger named John arrives – and the Yosts' banal existence is lifted into something profound, miraculous and, possibly, universal.

Set in Imperial Beach, California, the last great surf-break before Tijuana, where the U.S. meets Mexico, and water meets land, John From Cincinnati tells the story of the Yosts, a family of surfers whose awesome athletic talents have seemed for generations to come with a curse attached. The gifts of 13-year-old Shaun rival those of Butchie, his addict-derelict father, and his now-ascetically-withdrawn grandfather Mitch, both of whom defined the sport in their heydays. In shaping Shaun's career, his grandmother Cissy strives to achieve a commercial and athletic success that will compensate for the frustrations and failures of her life with her husband and son.

Into this world, where even simple joy has been turned into a commodity, steps a mysterious stranger named John. Soon after, things begin to happen to the Yosts, and those whose lives they touch, that test the boundaries of past and present, the mundane and the miraculous, the natural world and what lies beyond it.
yes, but is it any good?

My list of current shows goes like:
Entourage
Rescue Me
John from Cinci
Traveler
Storm Hawks (hells yea cartoon network)

John from Cinci is still too new to really have me hooked but Entourage and Rescue Me are must watch shows IMO. Traveler is a good filler but its just Prison Break season 2 with new people. Storm Hawks is cool for the animation/action but its a kids show so yea...

I really want to check the Tudors but I haven't been able to justify getting another lame movie network for a couple shows.

Well i really dig surfing, so this got my interest right away. Its starting off interesting. I like the actors that are in it, i know they are open for anything cause of the diveristy of their past roles. The story is already getting interesting, with the supernatural things going on, so this might go the way of heroes, it makes sense given the huge success of said show.

Im watching, we will see what happens. I dont wanna give spoilers, but how it ended was in a good enough spot for me to come back. Now stop the reruns plzkthnx

Is Deadwood finished? I watched a few episodes at a buddy's house (cause I don't have HBO) and loved it. I did find the dialogue a bit broadwayish or something. But other than that, it was good. I really want to see this John from Cincinnati. It looks good.

Same here. I liked the first and second episodes, but by episode 6, the religious nature of it started to aggrivate me. Carnivale did it well.
