Why dont FPS games have lobbies?

Post by Foo »

In (for example) C&C Generals, there is a 'Lobby' area, where players can congregate in order to start games.

Basically, these lobbies act as a meeting post for players who are currently wanting a game.

Has this ever been implemented in an FPS game? If not, can you think of any reasons why? If so, was it successfull?

Yeah, I considered this. It seems to me that IRC Pickup games are a response to the lack of lobby, rather than an equal replacement.

They do fulfil part of the function of a lobby, aiding higher skill players to find one another.

lawl, this now leads me to believe foo didn't play ut2k4 at all, and just pretended. =o Don't ya remember the built-in irc plugin? =p

I only played ut2k4 very sparringly but I do remember the main channel was always filled with a hundred or so people and the fuckin scroll box would go down non-stop. People would just spam usuless shit. And in-between that there was sometimes a line or two, if you where able to catch it, of an ip and game info.
