Since no one's in T&T at the moment - Printer sharing?

Post by Nightshade »

I have my printer connected to one PC, and I want to print from my laptop over my wireless network. I can't seem to make this happen.

Help.

Have you checked your printer sharing options?

Is your printer shared in your control panel settings?

Make sure the printer is shared on the network.

Go to add printer on the laptop.

Add network printer.

Type in the name of the of the network printer.

Click apply.

You're done.

I shared the printer, made sure the firewalls were turned off on both machines just in case, yet the laptop won't see the printer.

Did you manually type in the name of the network printer on your laptop?

Some times a computer won't see the shared printer on the network and you must type in the network name of the printer

The printer name can be obtained by going to the shared printer in the control panel of the PC the printer is hooked to.

Should look something like this when you type it in on your laptop.

MAINPCNAME/PRINTERNAME

Silly question here, are these two machines on the same subnet?

I believe so, yes. 192.168.1.xxx, as assigned by the router.

edit: I'm uninstalling ZoneAlarm, I think it's imposing some sort of fag0try here as my laptop won't see anything at all.

edit 2: The laptop's running XP Home, if that makes any difference.

What OS' are both of these machines running?

If they are running Windows 2K/XP, you may need to allow access from the laptop top the desktop.

Meaning, if the user of the laptop (local) is "Motorcycle" with a password of "isbroke" is not a user account on your desktop, you may not have permissions to access that shared network resource.

To resolve this, create a user account on your desktop machine with the same username and password as you currently use to login on the laptop, check the security on the shared printer, and you should be good to go.

It's working, ZoneAlarm was keeping the laptop from seeing anything in the workgroup, most likely because it's fucking gay.

So, next question: What's a free firewall program that doesn't smoke pole?

Are you against having a hardware firewall? If not, I just got a Linksys WRT54GC from Circuit City for $59.99. Luckily for me, there was a $20 discount so I got it cheaper that day but for $60, its a way better firewall than any software one out there.

If you still want a software firewall, go with Kerio Personal Firewall, it rocks.

In Zone Alarm you have to click on the firewall tab, then on the zones tab and enter the IP Address of the other computer, and vice versa if you run zonealarm on both computers.
