my internet seems sick

so for the past few days my internet connectivity has been balls up. at times it gets dog slow. last night i was actually downloading a file at 3xx bytes/s. this problem started gradually but seems to be getting worser as time goes on.

i have a few ideas of what might be causing this. we just intalled a homeplug network in my house so that could be the culprit but i'm not about to go rip that out just yet. first i wanna do a bit more troubleshooting.

firstly does anyone know of a good and accurate bandwidth tester? isn't there also a program that traces your connectivity route to servers so you can see if you're getting routed through a slowdown area?
then, are there any cmds i might try in msprompt to flush my current settings and obtain new ones in case something may have got fooked?

right now it seems as if i would be better off on a 56k dialup.

Check what's using your connection currently (with your firewall) to ensure you dont have something uploading information.

If you're on a router, check the connections to see if any PCs are constantly transmitting (virus or unclosed P2P)

You can tracert (cmd prompt) to servers to check for slow hops.

Give those 3 a go and if still no dice more advanced stuff might be needed.

"ripping out" the homeplug network would be the first thing i'd be doing, but do some comarison speed runs at dslreports

k so looking at the speed test from dslreports, something is obviously fucked...

Your download speed : 84 kbps or 10.5 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 356 kbps or 44.5 KB/sec.

i'm going to pull out my laptop tomorrow if i have time and plug it straight into the modem to see if it's on my end or something fucked up with comcast.

looking through the firewall logs nothing seems abnormal. tracerts aren't really telling me anything worthwhile either as i dont seem to see any troublesome hops.

ok so it occured to me the other night that my moms computer hadnt been scanned for spyware for months and months. so i went and cleaned it up and that seems to aleviate the bogged down speeds somewhat. however, it appears my down speed is still being halted at around 80KB/s. this doesnt make sense seeing as we're currently paying for a 6mbit down connection.

so i went to go plug my laptop directly into the modem but for whatever strange reason it wont give me internet connectivity. i get a warning saying "limited or no internet connectivity." but if i plug the modem back into the router i'm able to hook up to the internet just fine.

so i'm extremely fucking frustrated at the moment because i cant seem to connect directly to the modem and see if this down issue is something on my side or something my ISP has fucked up on. any suggestions?

try:

start>run, type "cmd" type "ipconfig /release", once released, type "ipconfig /renew" when laptop is plugged into the modem.

reboot your modem , then do the same steps as above. make sure the modem is totally done rebooting. prolly around a minute.

cant reboot the modem. it's got a fucking battery in it that i can't get to. it's a special modem that allows us to have a digital phone service along with our cable tv and internet.

now that i think about it, those speeds from dslreports are obtained between your WAN ip address and their server(s). i might be wrong, but take a look how they're performing those tests.

from what i can tell, that's exactly what it does. just tests speed over the 'net. do this:

setup an ftp server on one box, and download a file from each of the other boxes. that's a great way to test your throughput on your lan.

well file transfer over my network is super fast. mp3s are instant and when transfering large quantities of data it all goes purdy quick.
