Got a Firefox problem...

Post by Transient »

Each time I try to download a .mpg file from somewhere (take andyman's thread for example, it automatically adds ".mp3" to the end of the filename, which means I have to rename the files or else the computer thinks they're music files. I don't understand why Firefox is doing this. Removing my Download Manager Tweak extention doesn't help. Here's a screenie of the default suggested filename each time I try to download a .mpg file:

BTW, it doesn't try to rename other video formats or anything else, just .mpgs.
What the hell is it doing that for?

*runs AVG for the hell of it* :ninja:

A wild shot, but prolly cuz your winamp is foobared somehow and because of the mpeg extension you have associated with it. Don't you use any other 'real mans' video players like media player classic or vlc? If so, associate mpeg with one of those instead.

MPC is associated with .mpg files. I just use Winamp for audio. I recently went into Winamp to make sure it wasn't considered the default player for videos, which it wasn't.

Oddly enough, when playing video files I download through Firefox (any extention) with MPC, it always considers it a "Winamp media file" in that pulldown box. Then when I play it in MPC, in the bottom left the icon is the Winamp icon.

I uninstalled Winamp and restarted. Then the "save as type" field was blank without a dropdown at all, not even "all files". So I install Winamp and now I'm back where I started...

At least I know it's Winamp screwing up Firefox.

Did you try manually setting the association in preferences also? I've noticed with winamp sometimes it will set something random in there that I didn't want, and I have to go in there and set it back. I don't think during setup when it asks for what to associate music or videos that dosen't always work that nice.

It is and has been disabled. Only audio files play through Winamp ATM.
