Just read that topic at quakesrc. There's some disabled (and buggy) code in Q3 for flares and some people have worked a bit on it to make it work.

Both q3map and q3map2 are GPL'ed now. Adding flares back in should be as simple as copy/pasting the code from the former to the latter.

I've always played online at picmip 0. Bright green promode skins are enough.

looks like a cool way to add fog in the middle of a room but you should hide the light source.
as i recall q3 cannot do this ..the fog needs to be bordered by 4 brushes ..this method could make the fog no longer need border/walls etc

my 6800GT gets 220-300fps avg in q3 on maxed everything picmip 0 :D
my radeon 9500 got around 450fps usually at max everything, but that card died :(

picmip 1 is only good for voodoo/s3 users

Thank goodness. Dynamic light flares aren't cool, just obnoxious. I hope they decide to fix the shadows, and the lighting. You know, how you fire a rocket into a really dark area, and the dark area doesn't light up like in Quake 2 and Quake 4?

Quake and Quake 2 actually have true dynamic light that lights up dark areas. Q3 just doesn't.

Jedi Academy is the only game off-the-top-of-my-head that fixes this q3-engine dynamic lighting issue

IIRC it's a pretty simple fix. The current dynamic lights simply multiply the surrounding lighting, whereas what's needed is an additive effect.

So instead of
Zero * 100 = 0 Brightness
you have
Zero + 100 = 100 Brightness

Simple fix. Or it should be.

Then why the hell didn't they do that instead of having it the way it is now? Weird shit is always done for reasons that'll never be explained, like directional gibs, for example! >: [ *shakes an angry fist*

Because it's useless for mulitplay. tbh I clap that they didn't add useless stuff that didn't do shit to gameplay. Q3 aint supposed to be dark and 'cozy'.

yeah more like cg_oldgibs 1

Ofcourse it's not neccessary, but add it for the people that care about gameplay and the feel of a game. Do you know how many freaking Quad Damage rampages I get, and how much more rewarding it would be if I could rail someone's gibs across the map?

Yeah. : | It's very satisfying when you can tell how hard you wrecked someone.
