Fog and smoke.
Quake 3 and Quake 4 both used fog in their engines, which made it difficult to see past a certain distance. Since fog is already used in map making, why the hell can't it be implimented in rocket explosions n' shit? I'm sick of smoke puffs and animations.

The fog effects in Q3/4 engine are mostly geared towards the perspective of being inside the fog looking through or out of it. For situations where you're outside the fog looking in it's very limited, usually only being able to enter it from one side.
