Windows says I can't
access my own files.
I found out that my old HD still worked occasionally, so I tried to retrieve my old files.
But when I try to go into my directory, it says "Access denied". Surely this is some security measuire to prevent others accessing the files without being logged in as the right user, but the Windows install on that HD is broken. So how can I circumvent that?

really sounds like either
A. profile issues
or
B. whatever files you're trying to access happen to be on that one bad spot on the disk.
try creating an account with the exact same username/password as that of the old system. If you've already done so then I'd say try using some disk utilities to try and grab those files old skool style, son.

Yeah iirc they removed the file permissions tab from XP Home since the average home user would be confused by NTFS permissions. The ability is still there but you have to know what you're doing to access those permissions via safe mode or, as Riddla said, the CACLS command line utility.R00k wrote:You have to boot into safe mode just to view/change file permissions? That's retarded.
Yet another reason not to use it.

This permissions window is for share permissions only. File permissions will still prevent access.Underpants? wrote:actually i think you can change file permissions in xp home without safe mode?
1. Click on the start button
2. Then run
3. Type shrpubw
4. Chose the folder whose permissions you want to change and give the share a name
5. Click next, now you can chose custom if you want to have full options.
Sorry, it was just an assumption. Like I said, I've never used Home. :icon32:
The 'Custom' button sounds like something MS would do to access file permissions.... But I shouldn't make bets on Microsoft's consistency in implementing their features.
So does the Custom button just take you to advanced/more granular Share permissions?
