Windows says I can't

Post by SplishSplash »

access my own files.

I found out that my old HD still worked occasionally, so I tried to retrieve my old files.

But when I try to go into my directory, it says "Access denied". Surely this is some security measuire to prevent others accessing the files without being logged in as the right user, but the Windows install on that HD is broken. So how can I circumvent that?

really sounds like either
A. profile issues
or
B. whatever files you're trying to access happen to be on that one bad spot on the disk.
try creating an account with the exact same username/password as that of the old system. If you've already done so then I'd say try using some disk utilities to try and grab those files old skool style, son.

Yep, take ownership in the security properties. If it's really a permissions issue that should take care of it.

Good idea fellas. I guess I was assuming both disks had XP home vs. professional. Splish seems like an XP home guy to me.

Does Home not have those options?

I dunno, I can't say that I've ever really used it. :paranoid:

Eg. Booting into Safe Mode.

You have to boot into safe mode just to view/change file permissions? That's retarded.
Yet another reason not to use it.

Yeah iirc they removed the file permissions tab from XP Home since the average home user would be confused by NTFS permissions. The ability is still there but you have to know what you're doing to access those permissions via safe mode or, as Riddla said, the CACLS command line utility.

actually i think you can change file permissions in xp home without safe mode?
1. Click on the start button
2. Then run
3. Type shrpubw
4. Chose the folder whose permissions you want to change and give the share a name
5. Click next, now you can chose custom if you want to have full options.

This permissions window is for share permissions only. File permissions will still prevent access.

Hence the final step, clicking Custom.

Sorry, it was just an assumption. Like I said, I've never used Home. :icon32:

The 'Custom' button sounds like something MS would do to access file permissions.... But I shouldn't make bets on Microsoft's consistency in implementing their features.

So does the Custom button just take you to advanced/more granular Share permissions?

Custom takes you to the share permissions in the usual tick-boxes format.

...which has a security tab behind it.
