playing videos causes pc to slow to a halt.

Post by I cant spell u »

I think I might've posted this thread once before in the past. well, this problem still persists. Everytime I attempt to play any type of video, be it mpeg or avi, my pc will slow down, not crash, but slow to where it'll take a minute for it to process a mouse click. The video won't play aswell. Oddly, videos in youtube will play..

Have you tried updating your video card drivers after this began?

And any problems with DirectX? Try the tests?

maybe because it wouldn't make a difference since I've tried several ones and they fail to work properly

Do other streaming videos play? What I'm getting at is are the only ones that do it on your hard drive?

So have you tried QuickTime or WMP Classic? Perhaps trying out WMP11?

How about a codec pack?

I'm thinking low memory. You might try checking your available memory while it's crashing if possible. Also virtual memory settings.

I've adjusted those before, my games run fine, like Doom 3 and Half-life 2 run flawless. So I don't think it's memory, until the video plays then the memory is low, I've adjusted virtual memory aswell. No improvement.

Neat little test you can do...

Go to http://www.nhl.com, click on "Videos" at the top and click on any 700k link for a game. If it gives you crap ie. not playing, slowdown; it's clearly a codec problem. The videos use WMP.

Process of elimination bud.

I've tried media player classic, quicktime, windows media player, and vlc player...
would uninstalling and reinstalling my codecs help?

try uninstalling your codecs and JUST using VLC without external codecs. in other words, don't install more than what's boxed in with VLC by default.

Wrong codecs sparring with each other inside your computer can fuck up things in major fashion.

Well have you installed any manually? If not, just install the Ace Mega Pack and see if it helps.

Spectacles, testicles, wallet and watch.

Just dug out and looked over the old thread, nothing groundbreaking there. You said specifically mpg and wmv cause problems. So does avi work well?

Hello, I dont mean to hijack the threat or whatever, but I've googled this problem and it sounds like I'm having the exact same ordeal.

I was wondering if the original poster figured out the issue.
