Recently sujoy and the folks at esr did a great readup of almost all 'gaming-grade' mice.

I think it's pretty unbaised and well informed. Interesting to see the mx500 come out on top (i've never owned one, and it's pretty old isn't it?) But to be fair I guess it wouldn't have rated so high if it wasn't compared with the usb rate clocked @ 1000hz. The mx518 did good which is expected.
The laser mice seem to do worse than the optical, which I guess would be accurate with many gamers saying the laser just don't feel 'right'. Guess that's why people say the g5 sucks, etc.
Anyways definately check it out if you're in the market for a gaming-grade rodent.

I have the MX510 as well. I checked, there seems to be no difference in the optical equipment as compared to the 500, I guess the same electronics are used.
Reminds me... I read a few times (long time ago) PS2 connection was better, but after seeing that 500 Hz OC (1000 Hz OC was removed) I'm wondering which really is better...
With mouserate I currently have 200 Hz with PS2, so it might be better to use USB instead and OC the USB to 500 Hz?

Yes if you oc the usb you should get a better experience. Try 500hz first, not everything likes 1000hz. Also, I dunno this for sure but the port you will be plugging the usb in you shouldn't use anything else in it, UNLESS I'm mistaken that it only activates the higher rate when the mouse is plugged in.
Also you might see some framerate drops in some games, depending on your hardware speeds etc. On my slowish desktop I lost like 30 frames in q3 timedemo.

Seems like newegg has a ton of them things. I might get one since it's pretty cheap.Azer wrote:I have the mx500 and I am very pleased with it. I like the shape and the general feel of the mouse. The only problem is that when this one breaks, it's going to be quite difficult to find a replacement. There aren't many stores selling the mx500 any more
