I think they are referring to the huge MAC guns used by the UNSC ships and orbital defenses. You jump around on the outside of one of them on in the beginning of Halo 2.

if those calc's are true, then it would be somthing to debate, the wind resistance on the projectile alone would/should be enough to degrade it long before it hits anything other then the wind.

Incorrect. Missiles travel at hypersonic speeds (>Mach 5) and they don't erode. The Space Shuttle goes Mach 20, etc., etc.

600 mph sounds very slow for this kind of projectile... makes it very easy to miss a moving target.
