No chance now IMO. I can't see a way for HD DVD to win back any major house now.

That won't do much good if no one is making movies for them.

Stock clearance. Not a good sing for HD DVD.

Toshiba on Monday slashed the suggested retail price of its cheapest player, the HD-A3, from $299.99 to $149.99. The price for the HD-A30 was also halved, from $399.99 to $199.99, while the price on the high-end HD-A35 went from $499.99 to $299.99.

If the price of the HD DVD disks drops it's a sure sign the war's over.

Well, at least I only paid $100 for my HD-DVD player. I still haven't received my free movies, though.

That's pretty much game over. The selection of BluRay movies is better at all the big retailers: Wal-Mart, Target, and BestBuy.
Netflix and Blockbuster are going BluRay exclusive.
I couldn't even find an HD-DVD player at Target.
No hardware + no movies + no rentals = dead format.

The BluRay and HD-DVD formats are both backed by consortiums, not individual companies, but Sony was the lead for BluRay.

I admit that I thought Bluray would go the way of betamax, so this comes as a surprise.

I don't mind, though, since now the format wars will finally end.

Great, now we can all get back to just buying DVDs for the next year or so until someone actually releases a good movie in the new formats (no, NOT Transformers or Lord of the Rings)

How many different versions of LotR are there at this point? Now they're going to double it for Bluray.

Heh, Full Metal Jacket in HD will just emphasise that it was all shot in someone's back lot :D

In the UK, uptake among people who are not nerds is minimal and the choice is still very limited for Blu-Ray. E.g. in the ex-virgin megastore in Oxford street, there's one rack of blu ray discs to about 30 of DVDs. Fuck, there's more choice in the VHS section.

Plus, see Geebs' first rule of expensive AV equipment: by the time you can afford this stuff, presbyacusis is advanced enough that you can't appreciate it. Goes double for permanently exhausted, caffeine-hyped doctors.
