last year of uni one of my housemates was a pro road cyclist. He thought so much of the five finger shoes he set himself up as one of the first uk importers. This was about 3 years back I guess.

Weather is really nice outside today, so I went running for the first time this year. That got me thinking about running efficiency and reducing stress to the lower body. Wearing my current shoes (Adidas Climacools) I land heel first because of the thick heel and forward slope of the sole. Running around the house in socks, I tend to land mid-foot first, around the ball of the foot. With the shoes on, I found landing mid-foot rather difficult to do, almost like trying to run on "tippy-toes". The shoes encouraged heel-first impact.

Evolution has shaped us to run perfectly well barefoot, but we continue to pad our feet with thick layers of foam with the intention of reducing shock at the heel. This appears to actually be counter-productive.
There are some scientists who say we're naturally born runners as well, that our bodies evolved to run. Now, anthropologist Dan Lieberman, one of the proponents of the "human runner" school, concludes that we do it better without shoes...

...Lieberman found that runners in shoes usually landed heel-first. Barefoot runners landed farther forward, either on the ball of their foot or somewhere in the middle of the foot, and then the heel came down — much less collisional force.
Read the article, listen to the audio and watch the attached video:

Of course, running barefoot is fun and all, until you step on some broken glass, sticks or a pile of poo. Vibram Fivefingers might be a good midpoint, allowing natural running while protecting the sole from road debris. They just look kind of funny. Perhaps something a little more traditional looking, Nike Free 5.0 v4? Haven't tried those myself, but some good reviews on the interwebz and I customized them with blue and orange.

I'm a big fan of barefoot mechanics. I use the nike frees myself (using the sparq's now). I loved em so much I tried using them for tennis but the lack of ankle support made it too risky for rolling ankles. I use the sparqs for walking, running, and they're extremely comfortable.

This is a good read:

Obsidian, Nike Free seem to get fantastic reviews. FWFI-I trust few of those epinion type sites, but do read a running blog or two that rave about 5 fingers. New Balance makes a couple of low-cushion shoes that offer the same stability and ride. I am always curious and make an effort to see what the ranked leaders wear in the local footraces I participate in, and they ALL seem to be fans of the New Balance 993-ish shoe type, for whatever reason. Don't have any personal recommendations, since I've never spent more than 80 bucks on shoes :o but I definitely am interested in the same subject.
Zeeko, you're an endurance runner (for whatever reason, I seem to recall your pace being shy of 6 minutes?), what prompted you to drop the cash for the vibrams? curiosity?

Just ordered a pair of the vibram sprint model, looking forward to getting them. When i was unemployed the only time I wore shoes was to go to the store and I thoroughly enjoyed being barefoot

Okay so they are a little snug on the big toe and they could have made the two outside toes as one, but I just got them and have to get used to them. I'll wear them tomorrow during the workout and see how they feel. The big toes rubber flap could have come back around further to at least go past my toenail. They will take some getting used to as I am super paranoid about the toenails on my big toes.... they've been ripped off a couple of times.
I could go a size or two smaller as well... might just do that.

The outsole has really really good traction!

Someone mentioned these might be good for climbers, but there's not enough toe support to make them serious rock boot contenders. Always wanted to give them a go for running in though...

Ran a couple miles today and the shoes are great, just as good if not better than when I would run in my super thin wrestling shoes.

today was:
1 mile run
100 pullups
200 pushups
300 squats
1 mile run
done in 64.5minutes .. pushups took forever

I didn't want to take the shoes off and go back to my normal shoes, they feel that much better
