Samsung is significantly better than HTC when it comes to timely software updates, which is definitely something to consider.

htc all the way. samsung is a cheap plastic POS in comparison to the craftsmanship that goes into HTC's

Software and shit like that are secondary in this market. It's hardware you're buying...you can do anything you want with the software bit.

Geoff, there's also a less expensive plastic iPhone coming out in September. Maybe you should go for that. You being on a fixed budget and all...

I'd go for HTC. I've had an HTC for two years, dropped it probably 100 times and it still works like a champ. My friends have all gone through 3-4 Samsungs in the same amount of time.

That said, the HTC (at least the one I have) seems to be relatively tricky to root, if you're into that sort of game. *shrug*

I like Samsung devices because you can easily swap out the battery and can put in an SD card. I'm guessing the same will be true with the Note 3. How about HTC one max?

Is that not standard fare for Android phones?

My provider kept pestering me about updating, so I'm on jellybean now.
Maybe some things are optimized behind the screens, but I can't really tell the difference with 2.3 except some cosmetic stuff.

This is the right choice.

Or if you really dislike plastic and would rather go for HTC's build quality, the HTC One Google Play Edition.

it's true... my LG is locked in tight.. you can open it, but it is a fucking nightmare. But it was the lesser of two evils since the only other option with my carrier at the time was a gaylaxy S3

:olo: gaylaxy.

What the fuck is with companies making the battery/sdcard hard to access? What fucking purpose could that possibly serve? Don't they want to sell batteries and sdcards to stupid fucks who lose/ruin them?

Not all Android phones have an SD card slot, but I guess the HTC One Max will have it.

Not really. I've heard people complain about Samsung being slow with updates and my personal experience with the JB update for my Galaxy Note 10.1" is that it was delayed time and time again. But do consider that usually it's not the manufacturers that are the bottleneck, but the providers. If you've got a branded phone, then the biggest delay is the provider because they need to put their crapware back in there.

That wasn't meant to be high praise for Samsung, more a scathing indictment of everyone else [edit: and the Android update process. And yes, I am aware of carrier delays as well.].

Aside from ASUS, Samsung are regarded as one of the best at updating their phones. Most of their flagships get at least two major updates compared to other OEMs. S2 went from GB to ICS to JB. Note 2 is jumping straight from 4.1.2 to 4.3. The S3 went from ICS to 4.1.2 to 4.2 and might be getting 4.3 as well. Contrastingly, HTC tends to average closer to one major update, even for their flagships. Plus they have disasters like the Thunderbolt.

Go Nexus or go home. The Google Play Edition phones will be interesting to watch. 4.3 was released on Nexus devices exactly a week ago, so let's see how long it takes them to update.
