the thing to take awat from quantum computing , is that it is a very specialized tool. Even with cost not being an issue, it will prolly never replace desktop every day computing... they are extremely good with large number calculations, that's where they shine. Running quake3 on the other hand, not so much.

I don't know - with large and super efficient quantum computing centers distributed around the globe there could be a shift towards personal cloud computing where you use cheap devices locally and offshore your intense calculations. In the far future!

But then again; no normal person is actually smart enough to require intense calculations.

That's an interesting thought: With near unlimited calculations it would be possible to tackle for example hard mathematical problems using formalised mathematics and a brute force attack to distill proofs. This would shift the practice of mathematicians in a major way.

Same goes for programming itself. Once you specify what you want you could brute force through a wide array of programs and see if they match the specification.

So this would cause a shift from "how?" to "what?" and ultimately to "why?".
