Quake 4 Retail BETA Patch v1.0.5 - Windows

Post by RedAlley »

http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=8122

Beta update for Quake 4 with (major) performance enhancements. As described by Activision:

This update is recommended for Windows users with Intel Hyper-Threading Technology (HT Technology) enabled processors, multiple processors, or systems with a dual core processor. The update is also required for Windows and Linux server admins as it addresses a recently identified problem with servers left unoccupied for very long periods of time (these servers will appear to be operating normally, but will crash clients that attempt to connect to them). This update will bring any previous version of the game (1.0.0 or 1.0.4) up to date and will not affect pure server, PunkBuster compatibility or protocol consistency.

id Software and Raven have worked with Intel to dramatically improve QUAKE 4 performance on systems with HT Technology, multiple processors, or dual core processors. Players who have a system with one of these configurations will notice performance gains in QUAKE 4 of anywhere from 25% - 87% depending on processor type. If you do not know whether or not you have a multi-processor, dual core, or HT Technology enabled system, please see the ReadMe file for simple instructions on checking your system. Please use the form at http://www.idsoftware.com/bugs/ to report any issues you find with the 1.0.5 update.

Hopefully this will patch the 360 version (or lead to a patch for it) because the 360 version fucking sucks performance wise.

Shame it runs 60 FPS locked for me as it is...

Is that it? Just FPS fixes? What about all the other stuff stopping people from PLAYING the game?

"Activision also let us know that there are broader Quake 4 updates planned for next year, including several multiplayer map packs."

Spunkness!

New maps are fantastic, but damn, no other news...? Its a good patch and all, i just hope they make the 360 version worth getting (i want i just for Q4 in perfect smooth frame rate on my 360 TV, but not if the main Q4 frame rate is so poor).

Hmm, gotta get myself an Athlon 64 X2. :)

PQ4.net mirrors of the patch: http://www.planetquake4.net/download.ph ... d&lid=2255

Boo for no gameplay and feature fixes though. :( I wonder if stability has improved at all too.

I love filefront. I always get great speeds. Lots of mirrors and never any lines.

nobody has any solid before and after numbers?

does it just help to bring p4's closer to or exceed a64's?

r00k, how do you find performance after this patch on your x2?

Performance is a serious issue actually. Unless your computer was built with top components in the last 12 months it will basically suck at playing this game at anything more than the very lowest settings. Thereby discouraging a lot of gamers from playing the game.

Unfortunately this fix will mostly help those people with already fast systems, i.e. newer dual core chips, so it's not really solving the performance problem for most people. The HT increase is not that much, but still it helps. Still it's a good thing as more people will eventually upgrade to dual core cpus.

i saw a small (VERY small) increase on my x2 3800+ (SLI 7800GT's as well). Maybe 2-4 fps tops, nothing noticeable honestly. I was kind of dissapointed thought, not only with the lack of any type of increase in performance, but also the fact that when SMP is enabled or disabled, my game crashes when i 'quit'. It just randomly eats shit. No idea why, but before this patch it worked just fine.

I too wish this patch had been something more substantial like the much needed game fixes...

Haven't installed it yet, but I'll let you know when I get home tonight.

It sounds like it was optimized for Intel cpu's, so maybe that's why AMD's aren't showing as large a boost in performance?

Dunno, but I'll find out tonight. :)

has a few different posts from users with benchmark scores. from what i can see, you can actually see improvements in resolutoins 1024x and under where it is cpu limited.

Well I'm running a single 7800GT with an X2 3800, so I'm curious how much it will affect mine.

That goes only for CPU, basically. My Radeon 9800 Pro gets me 63 fps with only some small drops on most custom maps, a bit lower on the stock maps and SP. An Athlon 64 3200+ and a 9800 Pro weren't 'top' components 12 months ago. It seems quite some people have stuttering sound and video in MP games even with better specs than mine, but i wouldn't know if that will be solved by this update.

dual core - you should get "proper" smp (i.e. proper concurrent processing of more than a single thread at once) - should be better than a HT p4 I would guess - all depends on how much mutlithreading they've put in to increase performance - also obsiously depends on how well they've dealt with any synchronisation issues and how efficiently they've done this also tough

well this pr does not agree with my setup atm :(

amd64 x2 +4800, 7800 gtx - been playing at 1024x768 and i have seen a drop in fps with the only difference between the 2 demo runs being the pr install.

Not sure where to go from here - looking to see if anyone else has seen this

a lot of people are reporting little fps gain to minor fps loss, as you.

what about at the lower resolutions? any increase there?

Players who have a system with one of these configurations will notice performance gains in QUAKE 4 of anywhere from 25% - 87% depending on processor type.
Maybe if you have a P4 Quake 4 edition? :icon28:
