Here's the deal.
If an irukandji gets you, you're in deep shit. But they're rare as fuck. Last time I was at the Whitsunday Islands along the Great Barrier Reef I was talking to one of the divemasters and he said in 30 years of swimming in the waters he'd never been stung, so look at it like that.
Of course you're going to hear the story about the random tourist Jap who had never been in the ocean before and got stung 10 seconds into his first dive, but that's certainly not the norm.
